The Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative
In today's society, an enterprise should not only create benefit for itself, but also make contributions to society. For Hitachi, CSR is not a brand new concept, as it is derived from Hitachi's entrepreneurship based on which Hitachi conducts various independent CSR activities.
Based on this universal corporate philosophy, and in order to meet the expectation of today's society, the CSR policy of the Hitachi Group was reformulated in March 2005. This policy, shared by the entire Hitachi Group, will help to enhance our CSR activities as we go forward.
The Hitachi Group has drawn up a new Environmental Vision Sustainability Compass. The basic policy of Sustainability Compass is to create a business community, and ultimately, a recycle-oriented society that is able to co-exist in harmony with the nature. As part of Sustainability Compass, our activities are grouped into four basic categories as North, South, East and West. We believe that positive advancement in each of these directions will lead us closer to the creation of a sustainable society.
Utilizing Design for Environment, Hitachi is striving to minimize the impact that products have on the environment. By the end of March of 2005, Hitachi had developed 817 products, including a total of 3,294 different model types, classified as "eco-products." In order to reduce environmental impact at each of its production sites, Hitachi is now creating eco-factories working to prevent global warming through energy conservation measures, reduction of waste and management of chemical substances. By the end of March of 2005, 277 of Hitachi's group companies in Japan and overseas have obtained ISO14001 certification.
In terms of education, launched in 1996, the Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative (HYLI) is bringing the most talented and most promising students from six Asian countries together to exchange their ideas and intensify the attention paid by young students on the major regional issues. Besides, the Hitachi International School Teacher's Exchange Program (HISTEP), established in 1987, has always been encouraging the mutual understanding between teachers from US, Europe and Japan. Furthermore, since 1998, Hitachi has held several EU Hitachi Science & Technology Forum sessions in Europe on how the science and technology should better serve the society. To date, nay, Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. has supplied more than 50 machines to many countries all over the world, removing thousands of landmine, providing a safer living space for the local people, especially children, and the most fundamental conditions for the local economic development.

Hitachi's CSR in China
In China, Hitachi highlights environment and education as the most important CSR issues. A case in point, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. renders much support to the desert forestation efforts in Inner Mongolia.
As for education, since 2005, Hitachi has been starting with "China Fellowship Program" through which Hitachi funds young promising Chinese researchers for their study tours at Japanese research institutions, broadening their academic views for investigation. To support the Project Hope, Shanghai Hitachi Household Appliances Co., Ltd. established Shanghai Hitachi Hope Primary School in Lichuan County of Jiangxi Province in 1997, and donated the study and living utensils to the school later on. Since 1995, Hitachi China Ltd. and Shanghai Hitachi Household Appliances Co., Ltd. have been the sponsors of "the Hitachi Cup Chinese Celebrated Universities Debate Invitation Game".

In terms of sports, Hitachi Construction Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., as the sponsor of Tianjin Lions team, renders much support to China Baseball League. In addition, at the end of 2003, Hitachi Construction Machinery became the official sponsor of China National Baseball Team to compete for a berth for the next year's 2004 Athens Olympics.

Always committed to its Corporate Social Responsdibility (CSR), Hitachi is ready to respond to any emergency and nature disaster.
Hitachi (China) Ltd. was Chosen as The Multinational Award Winner in The 2006 China Philanthropy List
Several cases in point -- in August 2006, Hitachi China and subsidiaries of Hitachi Group in Guangzhou donated RMB500,000 to aid the flood-stricken area in Guangdong Province. Besides, Guangzhou Hitachi Elevator Co., Ltd ever contributed RMB600,000 to Guangzhou Education Fund, Guangzhou Fund Pool for Aiding Students in Need, Guangzhou Red Cross Medical Aid Fund, Baise Prefecture of Guangxi, and the victims of the tsunami in SEA. After joining the Alashan SEE Ecological Association in October 2005, the company committed a total donation of RMB1 million (RMB100,000 in each year) to assist with the latter's sand storm prevention initiatives. On the other hand, Hitachi Ltd. and Hitachi Medical Systems donated 10 Sirius Star Mobile X-ray machines manufactured by Hitachi Medical Systems to China's Ministry of Health in May of 2003 to help the Chinese people in the fight against SARS.
To honor Hitachi's unremitting efforts in CSR, Hitachi (China) Ltd. was chosen as the Multinational Award Winner in the 2006 China Philanthropy List. Hitachi will, instead of resting upon its laurels, spare no efforts to make more contributions to society.
