General Introduction

Finger Vein Authentication technology was born out of Hitachi's advanced research to measure brain-function activity in the field of medical science. In that research, near-infrared light was used to observe the increase in blood flow and was found to be also applicable to obtain the finger vein pattern. As finger vein patterns are different for each finger and for each person, authentication based on finger vein patterns becomes possible.

The three main advantages of finger vein authentication in comparison with other biometrics are the following:
(1) As veins are hidden inside the body, there is little risk of forgery or theft, and the surface conditions of the hands have no effect on authentication.
(2) The use of infrared light allows for non-invasive, contactless imaging that ensures both convenience and cleanliness for the user experience.
(3) Finger vein patterns are relatively stable and clearly captured, allowing the use of low-resolution cameras to take vein images for small-size, simple data image processing.

Moreover, the authentication device can be compact in proportion to the size of fingers. And finger vein patterns are different even among identical twins and remain constant through the adult years.

Technologies

Innovative Technology

Finger vein authentication uses leading-edge light transmission technology developed by Hitachi to undergo pattern-matching and authentication. Near-infrared light is transmitted through the finger and partially absorbed by hemoglobin in the veins to capture a unique finger vein pattern profile, which is then matched with a pre-registered profile to verify individual identity.

Innovative Technology

Unrivaled Security

Hitachi's patented light transmission technology enables high-contrast vein "maps" to be captured without interference from wrinkles, lines, roughness, dryness or other imperfections on the surface of the skin. Only a small amount of biometric data is thus needed for pattern-matching, allowing Hitachi to deliver one of the world's fastest and most accurate personal authentication systems in a small, affordable, and user-friendly package.

Applications

Controlling Access

The finger vein authentication system prevents leakage of corporate information and entry of unidentified persons into home or office buildings. This system can also be utilized in conjunction with corporate identification cards or anti-theft monitors to achieve multiple layers of security control.

Controlling Access

Protecting Computer Login

PC users can now guard against illegitimate access or leakage of information on their computers by using the vein patterns in their fingers as their computer login. In addition, this finger vein authentication technology can also centralize information scattered in different locations to enable more effective information management.

Revolutionizing Banking

Vein pattern recognition technology eliminates the need for bank cards or PIN numbers, thus eliminating problems relating to loss, theft or falsification of cards or passwords. Banks can also use finger vein authentication systems to effectively manage transactions at bank counters and depositories.
